Project 4
ROCKALL
/ DWR CYMRU - WELSH WATER 1998 MAINS REFURBISHMENT PROGRAM For
5 months during 1998 ROCKALL worked for the Capital Management Mains Refurbishment
Team at Welsh Water. Our remit was to produce a set of figures for both OFWAT
and the Drinking Water Inspectorate on the length, material and lining type of
old iron water mains to be upgraded post 2000 (AMP 3)
To
enable us to produce this information we used Welsh Water's own computer system
- Gisamap a system used for holding all information on water plant throughout
Wales. This is a live system with daily updates on information. As well as this
we were given instruction on the use of Pyramid a system developed jointly by
Welsh Water and Cleveland Geotehnics to manipulate information held on the Gisamap
system, Microsoft Excel, Access Word and most importantly Microstation. We
were supplied with information on water sample locations with a failure due to
high iron content, this information would then correlate with customer complaints
in the region and a scheme would be suggested to the technicians responsible for
that area (Water Quality Zone). If the scheme was justified we then calculated
the lengths of all cast iron, spun iron and ductile iron mains under 12" diameter
in that zone and recorded the information in table form for submission.
